Larnaca local government reports surge in dangerous building cases

The Larnaca District Local Government Organisation (EOAL) has identified 1,099 potentially dangerous buildings in the city and district of Larnaca, four months after the implementation of a new assessment plan. This figure is significantly higher than the 563 cases originally reported by municipal and district authorities. Data shows that among 367 visual inspections conducted so far, 187 structures have been classified as Category C, meaning they are at risk of collapse if immediate action is not taken. Notably, 40 of these high-risk buildings are inhabited, with 31 located in Larnaca, leading to the issuance of danger decrees for 17 of them.

While Philenews reports 1,099 potentially dangerous structures and 187 high-risk cases, a recent statement by EOAL cites 335 total dangerous buildings and 189 high-risk cases. Authorities have intensified interventions, recently overseeing the demolition of an abandoned structure on Stavrodromiou Street at the owner's expense. Similar measures, including mandatory repairs, building evacuations, and fencing off vacant properties, have been implemented across Larnaca and Tersefanou. Owners in several instances have been required to hire private engineers to draft safety and structural restoration plans, as the organization continues to prioritize the elimination of public hazards caused by neglected properties.
