Trial proceedings suspended in Central Prison document scandal

The Nicosia Criminal Court has adjourned proceedings until October 9, 2026, regarding the case of sensitive documents discovered at the residence of a chief prison officer in April 2024. The case involves eight defendants, with five individuals (defendants 4 through 8) having submitted formal requests for the suspension of criminal prosecution against them. State prosecutor Vasilis Bissas requested the postponement to evaluate these applications, noting that a potential approval could significantly streamline court procedures.

The 58-page interim decision from the court recently addressed a defense challenge concerning the Prosecution's refusal to disclose certain witness materials. The court ruled that withholding specific documents was justified, citing the sensitive nature of the materials, some of which pertain to national security. While legal representatives for defendants 3 through 8 did not object to the postponement, counsel for defendants 1 and 2 expressed opposition due to their clients' ongoing suspension from work.

The upcoming hearing on October 9 will determine the Legal Service's position regarding the stay of proceedings. If granted, the move could fundamentally alter the trajectory of the trial for the specified defendants, while the court continues to navigate the complexities of classified evidence and institutional accountability.
