Cypriot political parties initiate electoral reform proposal

On September 29, 2026, the Cyprus Green Party (Movement of Ecologists – Citizens' Cooperation) launched a cross-party initiative aimed at reforming the national electoral system. The movement, initiated by a letter from former leader Stavros Papadouris dated August 6, seeks to address systemic inequalities and weaknesses introduced by the 2015 election law amendments.

The core of the proposal focuses on the adoption of horizontal voting and the restoration of the "simple proportional representation" system for both the second and third distributions of parliamentary seats. The movement has already established a dialogue with various political entities, including ALMA, Direct Democracy, EDEK, and DIPA, to discuss these structural changes and foster a more representative democratic process.

This initiative serves as a response to perceived deficiencies in the current legislative framework, which proponents argue hinders modern voter representation. The coalition plans to continue discussions to gather further parliamentary support, aiming to pave the way for formal legislative amendments in the near future.
