H5N1 avian influenza confirmed at Athalassa National Forest Park in Cyprus

On September 29, 2026, the Veterinary Services of the Cyprus Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment announced the detection of the H5N1 avian influenza virus in a goose at the lake within Athalassa National Forest Park, located in the Nicosia district. The animal was found dead after a visitor reported observing abnormal behavior in the bird in the days leading up to its death.

In response to the discovery, authorities have advised park visitors to avoid feeding, approaching, or coming into contact with any birds in the area. The Veterinary Services are currently collaborating with an EU reference laboratory to determine the virulence of the detected virus strain. Official notifications have been sent to the European Commission and the World Organisation for Animal Health regarding the case.

To prevent further transmission, the government has mandated that poultry farmers and owners of backyard chickens take strict biosecurity measures. This includes housing birds in enclosed, covered areas to strictly prevent any direct or indirect contact with wild or migratory birds, as the virus can be transmitted through contact with infected individuals or contaminated materials.
