Parliamentary committee intervenes in Mari and Zygi housing dispute

The Parliamentary Committee for Refugees, Enclaved, Missing and Stricken Persons has unanimously demanded a permanent solution regarding 12 housing units in Mari and Zygi. Residents of these units recently received eviction notices via stickers, requiring them to vacate their homes within two months. The committee has decided to summon the Minister of Interior to its next session to address the lack of clear relocation alternatives provided to the affected individuals.

This dispute originates from a 1995 state decision to relocate refugees from Mari to facilitate the construction of an energy center, a process that began in 1998. At that time, the state provided plots of land and financial aid, while the Department of Town Planning and Housing constructed the 12 units to house eligible beneficiaries. Committee Chairman Nikos Kettiros criticized the provincial administration for repeatedly bringing up this issue over the last 30 years without offering a definitive resolution. The committee insists on a permanent settlement rather than temporary measures.
