Cyprus records lowest rate of overcrowding for young people in EU

Eurostat data published on September 29, 2026, indicates that Cyprus recorded the lowest rate of young people aged 15 to 29 living in overcrowded households within the European Union in 2025. The rate in Cyprus stood at just 3.5%, significantly lower than the EU average of 26.9%. For the total population of Cyprus, the overcrowding rate was recorded at 2.2%.

Following Cyprus, Ireland and Malta reported the next lowest rates at 7.4% and 7.7%, respectively. In stark contrast, countries with the highest rates of overcrowding among youth included Romania at 60.4%, Latvia at 54.9%, and Bulgaria at 52.8%. Across the EU, the data shows that overcrowding rates generally decrease with age: the highest incidence occurred in the 15-19 age bracket at 30.1%, followed by 28.7% for those aged 20-24, and 21.8% for the 25-29 age group.

Overall, the EU average for youth overcrowding was 10.1 percentage points higher than the rate for the total population, which stood at 16.8%. This statistical analysis highlights a clear disparity in housing conditions across different member states, placing Cyprus at the forefront of favorable living conditions for young adults in the region.
