Cyprus records lowest EU overcrowding rates for young people in 2025

Data published by Eurostat on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, reveals that Cyprus recorded the lowest rate of young people aged 15 to 29 living in overcrowded households within the European Union. In 2025, only 3.5 per cent of youths in Cyprus lived in such conditions, significantly lower than the EU average of 26.9 per cent.

Following Cyprus, Ireland and Malta reported the next lowest rates at 7.4 per cent and 7.7 per cent, respectively. Conversely, the highest overcrowding rates were found in Romania at 60.4 per cent, Latvia at 54.9 per cent, and Bulgaria at 52.8 per cent. Across the EU, the overcrowding rate for the total population stood at 16.8 per cent, which is 10.1 percentage points lower than the rate for young people.

Eurostat figures further indicate a negative correlation between age and overcrowding. Among the youth demographic in the EU, the highest rate was observed in those aged 15 to 19 at 30.1 per cent, followed by 28.7 per cent for those aged 20 to 24, and 21.8 per cent for the 25 to 29 age group.
