Internal disputes and leadership tensions within DISY party regarding 2028 presidential candidacy

Democratic Rally (DISY) member Giorgos Pamboridis has publicly criticized his party’s internal procedures for selecting a candidate for the 2028 presidential elections. Describing the current party atmosphere as a "tragic image" and an "operetta," Pamboridis denounced alleged interventions by external actors and rejected rumors of behind-the-scenes deals with party figures such as Averof Neofytou or Annita Demetriou. He emphasized that his political decisions are governed by his own conscience rather than external influence.

Pamboridis expressed strong concerns regarding the expedited timelines set by the party's executive office for nominating candidates. He argued that the current process restricts the ability of candidates to present their vision to the electorate effectively. Former party official Michalis Sofokleous also joined the criticism, warning that the party is on a potentially irreversible path toward disintegration due to heated internal conflicts.

Looking ahead, Pamboridis is scheduled to present his concerns to the Political Bureau on Friday. He expects to finalize his decision on whether to seek the party's nomination over the coming weekend. He clarified that if he chooses to run and is defeated, he will not proceed as an independent candidate, maintaining his commitment to the party structure.
