Second Union for the Mediterranean ministerial meeting on water held in Rome

On Monday, September 29, 2026, the second ministerial meeting of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) on water was held in Rome, Italy. The event, co-chaired by Jordan and the European Commission, brought together 40 delegations from UfM member states to discuss critical regional water management issues.

Andreas Gregoriou, Director General of the Cypriot Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, represented the Republic of Cyprus. During his intervention, he emphasized the urgent necessity of shifting from purely political commitments to concrete actions and tangible investments to combat the rising pressures on Mediterranean water resources.

The meeting focused on evaluating progress regarding the UfM Water Agenda and establishing new priorities to bolster regional cooperation. Participants officially adopted a new ministerial declaration concerning water in the Mediterranean. This document emphasizes enhancing climate resilience, improving integrated water resource management, and utilizing both conventional and non-conventional water sources, such as desalination and wastewater reuse.
