Odysseas Michaelides outlines ALMA movement strategy for 2028 presidential elections

On September 29, 2026, the leader of the ALMA movement and former Auditor General, Odysseas Michaelides, declared the start of the pre-election period for the 2028 presidential elections in Cyprus. During an appearance on the television program "Enimerosi Tora," Michaelides emphasized that his movement intends to support a non-partisan, independent candidate who embodies the public's desire for a change in government.

Michaelides explicitly ruled out several prominent political figures as potential candidates for the movement’s support. He stated that Averof Neofytou cannot be considered because he is too closely identified with the DISY party, and he also rejected the possibility of supporting Andreas Mavroyiannis, noting his strong association with AKEL during the 2023 elections. Additionally, Michaelides confirmed that there is no prospect of cooperation with the current President of DISY, Annita Demetriou.

He argued that this early launch of the election campaign, occurring approximately 18 months before the vote, could negatively impact state operations and the handling of the Cyprus problem. While Michaelides acknowledged that his own name remains a possibility for candidacy, he clarified that he is not the movement's primary choice at this stage.
