Nicolas Papadopoulos emphasizes the necessity of state continuity for Cyprus

On Tuesday, September 29, 2026, the President of the Democratic Party (DIKO), Nicolas Papadopoulos, addressed the Cyprus Forum in Nicosia, stressing that the legal continuity of the Republic of Cyprus is the only mechanism capable of protecting the country. He argued that if the state were to be dissolved or paralyzed following a potential resolution to the Cyprus problem, Greek Cypriots would face a fate similar to that of the Palestinians, losing their sovereignty and becoming stateless.

Papadopoulos stated that while a functional solution remains theoretically possible, it currently depends entirely on Turkey. He expressed deep pessimism, suggesting that Turkey is further away from a viable settlement than at any point in the past. Regarding the potential framework of a solution, he insisted that all European values and principles must be upheld. He explicitly rejected any proposal that would result in an apartheid-like system or internal administrative structures that utilize veto power to paralyze the government, warning that such concessions would inevitably lead the country into dangerous political instability.
