Hungarian MP Balazs Hanko arrested over embezzlement allegations

Hungarian authorities have arrested Balazs Hanko, a member of parliament and former Minister of Culture and Innovation, following the parliamentary decision on Monday to lift his immunity. Hanko is currently under investigation for the alleged embezzlement of public funds associated with the National Cultural Fund of Hungary (NKA).

According to prosecutors, the investigation focuses on the distribution of state grants exceeding 17 billion Hungarian forints, equivalent to over 40 million euros. Authorities are examining whether these funds, intended for cultural organizations and activities, were diverted in violation of established regulations. While Hanko has denied all allegations, he was interrogated as a suspect and remains in custody as the criminal investigation proceeds.

This development follows a broader probe into the NKA, which intensified in July after police conducted raids at the offices of the Fidesz party regarding allegations of opaque funding processes. Critics and various individuals have alleged that billions in grants were funneled to artists and groups linked to the ruling party without transparency. All involved parties have previously denied any wrongdoing as the judicial process continues.
