Anti-Corruption Authority reports on progress and legislative outlook

On September 29, 2026, Charis Poyiatzis, President of the Independent Authority Against Corruption, announced during the Cyprus Forum in Nicosia that the body has received 911 total complaints as of August 31, 2026. Of these submissions, originating from both citizens and various institutions, 645 cases have already been processed, representing a 71% completion rate. Poyiatzis noted that the authority has observed a general lack of public awareness regarding the definition and implications of corruption.

Looking ahead, the authority is preparing to discuss new investigative powers following the recent receipt of proposals from the Ministry of Justice, with formal deliberations expected to commence in October 2026. Regarding the potential granting of prosecutorial powers, Poyiatzis expressed concern over a perceived reluctance from relevant authorities to move forward, noting that such a change would necessitate an amendment to the Constitution of Cyprus. Furthermore, the authority has begun implementing a structured 11-point action plan to improve its operational framework and long-term efficacy in combating corruption across the nation.
