Hugo Martins celebrates one year as AEL Limassol manager
Portuguese coach Hugo Martins recently celebrated his one-year anniversary at the helm of AEL Limassol, having been appointed on September 29, 2025, as the successor to Paolo Tramezzani. During his tenure, Martins has worked to stabilize the team's performance, notably securing significant away victories against APOEL and Pafos FC. Despite facing challenges, including a heavy 0-6 defeat to APOEL early this season, the team currently sits in a strong position in the Cyprus League by Stoiximan, holding nine points after four matches.
The club is currently managing a significant injury crisis, as both Hamza Catakovic and Yannick Gomis suffered serious injuries in the season opener against Anorthosis, with Catakovic sustaining an ACL tear and Gomis suffering a fractured fibula and ankle dislocation. Meanwhile, coach Martins is evaluating his defensive options, having recently shifted from the summer signings Karo and Denswil to the pairing of Gomes and Antoniou following a positive tactical response. AEL is preparing for its next league fixtures, hosting Omonia 29th of May on October 11 before facing Omonia Aradippou at the AEK Arena on October 18.
