Violent protests and strikes escalate across France
Widespread civil unrest has erupted across France as high school students, supported by public sector unions, protest against government austerity measures and budget cuts ahead of the 2027 presidential elections. The movement, which began in the Ile-de-France region, escalated into violent clashes, with authorities reporting nearly 2,000 detentions and over 300 injured police officers. Education Minister Edouard Geffray confirmed that hundreds of students and staff members have been injured during the demonstrations, which have included arson, attacks on school directors, and the destruction of emergency vehicles.
The unrest has triggered significant political tension, with the government of President Emmanuel Macron, including Prime Minister Sebastien LeCornu, attributing the violence to radical left-wing instigators. In response to the growing chaos, approximately 400 schools were ordered to transition to remote learning. Authorities are bracing for further fallout as the administration moves forward with a 2027 budget plan intended to reduce public debt, while polls show declining popularity for the incumbent government.
