EU energy commissioner warns of difficult winter and high fuel prices

During an informal meeting of EU energy ministers in Dublin on September 29, 2026, Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen warned that Europe is facing a difficult winter due to the energy crisis triggered by the conflict in the Middle East. While the European Union does not anticipate supply shortages, officials expect oil and natural gas prices to remain at very high levels, creating significant pressure on both industry and approximately 50 million citizens already struggling with energy poverty.

To mitigate these costs, the European Commission is considering regulatory relief measures. A primary proposal involves delaying the implementation of European methane emission laws for imported hydrocarbons by one year, moving the deadline from 2027 to 2028. This potential postponement, which has also been requested by French President Emmanuel Macron, will now undergo further discussion by EU member states and the European Parliament. Brussels is also evaluating additional steps to make transport fuels more affordable as part of a broader effort to manage the anticipated economic strain throughout the colder months.
