Turkish football refereeing board officials detained in corruption probe

Turkish authorities have detained seven senior members of the Turkish Football Federation’s Central Referee Board, including chairman Ferhat Gundogdu, as part of an investigation into the alleged manipulation of refereeing procedures. The operation, which involved raids on homes and offices in Istanbul, was confirmed by Justice Minister Akin Gurlek on September 29 and 30, 2026. The probe focuses on irregularities regarding referee classifications, match assignments, scoring procedures, and officiating rule examinations.

Investigators utilized testimony from witnesses and complainants, along with expert reports, telecommunications records, and financial data provided by Turkey’s Financial Crimes Investigation Board (MASAK). Minister Gurlek stated that the arrests are part of a broader government initiative for 'clean football,' emphasizing that no official is immune from the law. While representatives for Gundogdu have not yet responded to requests for comment, the investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to examine evidence to determine individual accountability and restore confidence in the integrity of the national sport.
