Boeing wins major US Navy fighter contract amid military leadership cuts

The United States Department of War, led by Secretary Pete Hegseth, announced on Tuesday that Boeing has been awarded a contract worth over $20 billion to develop the FA-XX, a next-generation fighter jet for the U.S. Navy. The new platform will replace the existing F/A-18 Super Hornet and EA-18G Growler aircraft by the 2030s, operating alongside the F-35C. Boeing won the contract over competitor Northrop Grumman, causing a 2.25% rise in Boeing shares and a 3.5% decline for Northrop. The program, which faced years of delays and funding debates resolved by Congressional intervention, will be produced in St. Louis, Missouri.

Simultaneously, the Trump administration is pushing for a significant reorganization of the U.S. military. Secretary Hegseth is expected to announce a reduction of up to 20% in the number of high-ranking generals, admirals, and air force commanders during an upcoming address at the Quantico base in Virginia. These changes are slated to take full effect on January 1, 2027. This initiative follows a broader trend of leadership restructuring under the current administration, which has seen the removal of several top-tier military officials, including the former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Charles 'CQ' Brown, since the administration returned to power in early 2025.
