Cyprus official warns of gender bias in artificial intelligence

At the Cyprus Forum held in Nicosia, Gender Equality Commissioner Josie Christodoulou addressed the critical issue of gender bias embedded within artificial intelligence systems. Speaking at a panel titled “AI and Equal Participation: Who Shapes the Digital State?”, Christodoulou emphasized that AI models are not neutral, as they reflect the data, social assumptions, and the demographic makeup of the teams creating them. She noted that current technology and innovation sectors remain male-dominated, which inadvertently allows human stereotypes to be perpetuated by machine learning algorithms.

Christodoulou provided the example of AI models defaulting to gendered professional roles, such as assuming doctors are male and nurses are female, based on training data sets that contain historical social biases. To combat this, the Commissioner highlighted government initiatives involving the Ministry of Education. These programs aim to train career guidance counselors to identify and mitigate both conscious and unconscious biases in schools. The goal is to encourage girls to pursue STEM education and careers, ensuring a more diverse workforce that can contribute to the development of more equitable and inclusive AI technologies in the future.
