Cyprus faces unsettled weather with yellow warning for severe thunderstorms
Cyprus is currently affected by an unstable air mass, leading to rainfall, cloudy skies, and isolated thunderstorms that began to impact the island on October 2, 2026. The Department of Meteorology issued a yellow warning in effect from 10:00 to 17:00 on Friday, specifically targeting the western half of the island before spreading to other areas. Forecasts indicate rainfall intensity could locally exceed 35 millimeters per hour, accompanied by hail and shifting, strengthening winds. Temperatures are expected to peak at 28 degrees Celsius inland and on the coast, with 17 degrees in the mountains.
Heavy rainfall has already caused problems in the road network, particularly on the Limassol-Paphos highway near Polemidia, where water accumulation forced police to issue warnings. Additionally, flooding of the Aspros Potamos stream led to road closures in the Akamas region. Authorities have advised drivers to exercise caution and maintain lower speeds due to reduced visibility and hazardous road conditions. The unstable weather pattern is expected to persist through Monday, with continued rain and storm activity. While the meteorological office noted a high volume of inquiries from wedding planners and couples, they confirmed that while rain will be intermittent, no extreme destructive events are currently anticipated beyond the localized flooding reported.
