Cyprus issues yellow weather warning for storms and hail

The Cyprus Meteorological Department has issued a yellow weather warning effective from 12:00 to 18:00 on Wednesday, September 30. The alert covers inland areas, the mountains, and northern regions, where isolated strong thunderstorms and hail are expected. Rainfall intensity in these areas could locally exceed 35 millimetres per hour. Winds are forecast to range from light to moderate, reaching force 4 to 5 on the Beaufort scale along the coast, with the sea expected to be slightly rough.

The adverse weather is attributed to a low-pressure system affecting the region. While the primary focus of the warning is the north and the mountains, the department spokesperson Andreas Chrysanthou noted that rain might also affect areas such as Larnaca and Famagusta. Temperatures are expected to peak at 30°C inland, 28°C on the coast, and 18°C in higher altitudes.

Looking ahead, authorities remain cautiously optimistic regarding the national holiday events scheduled for tomorrow. While mostly cloudy weather is expected, forecasters believe the most intense phenomena will occur during the afternoon, potentially allowing for successful morning ceremonies. The unsettled conditions are predicted to persist through the weekend.
