Cyprus weather department issues yellow alert for severe thunderstorms
The Department of Meteorology in Cyprus has issued a yellow weather warning effective from 10:00 to 17:00 on Friday, October 2, 2026. This alert highlights the risk of isolated severe thunderstorms, which are expected to manifest initially in the western part of the island before potentially spreading to other regions. During these storms, localized rainfall is predicted to exceed 35 millimeters per hour, accompanied by the possibility of hail and shifting, strengthening winds.
Preceding this warning, unstable weather conditions began affecting the island on Thursday night, specifically impacting regions such as Paphos and Limassol. Authorities reported heavy rainfall and water accumulation on the Limassol-Paphos highway, particularly near Polemidia, prompting police to issue road safety advisories to motorists to maintain low speeds and keep their lights on. Temperatures across the island are forecasted to reach highs of 28 degrees Celsius inland and on the south and east coasts, while remaining cooler in mountainous regions.
This period of atmospheric instability is expected to persist until Monday, with cloudy skies and intermittent showers forecast throughout the weekend. The weather service advises the public to remain vigilant as the island continues to experience a shift toward autumn-like conditions, with temperatures fluctuating slightly below seasonal averages.
