Cyprus weather department issues yellow warning for storms
The Cyprus Department of Meteorology issued a yellow weather warning for isolated severe thunderstorms on Wednesday, September 30, effective from 12:00 to 18:00 local time. The alert covered inland areas, the north, and higher mountains, warning of potential hail and rainfall intensity locally exceeding 35 to 45 millimetres per hour. Low-pressure systems and unstable conditions characterized the region's weather, with winds strengthening to 5 or 6 Beaufort during storm activity.
While the yellow warning expired Wednesday evening, meteorological officials indicated that unstable conditions would persist through the end of the week. Spokesperson Andreas Chrysanthou noted that while rainfall would continue, there remained optimism that scheduled public events, including parades, could proceed as planned. Temperatures are expected to remain below seasonal averages, with a forecasted drop of up to four degrees Celsius by Friday. Further localized rain and occasional thunderstorms are expected to affect the island, particularly mountainous and coastal regions, through the weekend.
