Yellow weather warning issued for thunderstorms in Cyprus

The Cyprus Department of Meteorology has issued a yellow weather warning effective from 12:00 to 18:00 on Wednesday, September 30, 2026. The alert covers inland areas, the mountains, and the northern part of the island, where isolated strong thunderstorms, potential hail, and rainfall intensities reaching between 35 and 45 millimetres per hour are expected.

Spokesperson Andreas Chrysanthou confirmed that the instability is caused by a low-pressure system affecting the region. While the warning specifically highlights the northern, mountainous, and interior areas, authorities noted that other regions, such as Larnaca and Famagusta, may experience lighter rainfall. Winds are forecast at 3 to 4 on the Beaufort scale, occasionally strengthening to 5 or 6 during storms. Temperatures are set to reach 30°C inland, 28°C on the coast, and 18°C in higher mountains.

Despite the current unsettled weather, officials remain cautiously optimistic that upcoming anniversary events will proceed, as the most intense phenomena are expected during the afternoon. Unstable conditions are forecasted to persist through the week, with temperatures expected to drop by up to four degrees by Friday as the rainy weather pattern continues.
