DISY president Annita Demetriou addresses internal party tensions and the Cyprus issue

Following a meeting of the National Council on September 30, 2026, DISY President Annita Demetriou addressed the current state of the Cyprus issue and recent internal party controversies. Demetriou acknowledged that the recent United Nations General Assembly did not produce the desired outcomes, emphasizing that the focus must shift toward creating conditions for substantive negotiations. She highlighted the importance of upcoming diplomatic steps, including the October visit of UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy María Ángela Holguín and ongoing discussions regarding EU-Turkey relations.

Regarding internal dissent within DISY, sparked by public discussions about a private dinner attended by Averof Neophytou, Demetriou declined to address specific allegations. Instead, she stressed that her priority is to uphold democratic procedures and protect the party’s integrity. During a subsequent address at the Larnaca District Council, she confirmed that DISY will field its own candidate for the 2028 presidential elections, asserting that final decisions will rest with party members through formal processes rather than individual personal agendas. She explicitly stated that the focus must remain on institutional stability and collective responsibility to address national challenges.
