British bases police conclude summer coastal operations

Police in the British Sovereign Base Areas in Cyprus have concluded their summer enforcement efforts following the end of peak season operations. Running from June through August, operations Guardian in the west and Sentinel in the east focused on managing high traffic on roads and coastal areas. Notably, popular locations such as Lady’s Mile and Kourion beaches saw over 700,000 visitors, leading to an increased police presence.

During these operations, authorities recorded a total of 80 arrests, with 74 specifically occurring in the western areas near the popular beaches. Police opened 12 criminal cases and addressed significant road safety concerns, logging 22 cases of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol and five instances of dangerous driving. Additionally, the Marine Unit conducted over 700 checks of watercraft, including jet skis, and issued 35 fixed penalty notices in the Dhekelia area. Superintendent Melina Papagrigoriou expressed satisfaction with the enforcement outcomes, which also included 100 coastal patrols and 26 sea safety campaigns along the Ormideia-Xylophagou coastline and other sensitive sites.
