Cyprus parliamentary committee to probe alleged dysfunction at Culture Ministry

On September 30, 2026, the Cypriot House Education and Culture Committee held a meeting with the newly appointed Deputy Minister of Culture, Clea Papaellina. While initially intended as a formal introduction, the session shifted toward a substantive discussion regarding administrative dysfunction, alleged overstepping of authority by Director General Giorgos Papageorgiou, and reported intimidation of staff. AKEL MP Christos Christofides explicitly accused the Director General of interfering in the work of other officials, noting that these issues have prompted protests from artists and work stoppages by civil servants since December 2025.

The Committee decided to register the dysfunction as a separate, formal item for future investigation, intending to recall those involved for further questioning. The Deputy Minister acknowledged the ongoing dialogue with the civil servants' union, PASYDY, and expressed optimism regarding a resolution. She committed to providing detailed written responses to concerns raised by committee members. Beyond the internal management crisis, the meeting also addressed critical infrastructure and policy projects, including the construction of the new Cyprus Archaeological Museum, the Cyprus Library project, the status of artists' legislation, and the preservation of Paphos mosaics.
