Parent associations in Cyprus announce protest against new asphalt plant

Parent associations from eleven communities in Cyprus have announced a protest against the commencement of construction for the Prometheas Asphalt Ltd plant in Mitsero. The protest will take place on Friday, October 2, and will involve students abstaining from classes during the first two teaching periods, specifically from 7:45 a.m. to 9:05 a.m.

During this time, students will remain outside their school premises, accompanied by at least one parent or guardian at designated locations. The community, representing areas including Mitsero, Agrokipia, Meniko, Orounta, Agiou Ioanni, Arediou, Agiou Epifaniou, and Kalo Chorio, argues that the region is already overburdened by over 100 nuisance activities, including six quarries, livestock units, and sewage facilities.

Parents cite significant environmental and health concerns regarding the proximity of the industrial facility to residential zones and schools, asserting their right to a clean environment. They state that the project will further degrade the quality of life in the region and have vowed to continue their opposition to the development.
