Severe weather causes road closures and driving hazards across Cyprus
Between September 30 and October 2, 2026, severe weather conditions significantly impacted Cyprus's road network. Initial landslides occurred on September 30, leading to the closure of the Pyrgos–Kampos road and creating hazardous conditions on the Pedoulas–Kykkos–Kampos route due to falling rocks and debris. Police advised drivers to exercise caution and utilize alternative routes in affected mountainous areas.
Following these events, heavy rainfall began affecting major highways across the island starting October 1. Issues were reported on the Nicosia–Larnaca highway between Kosi and Lympia, as well as at various points in Akaki, Peristerona, and the Astromeritis–Evrychou highway. By October 2, water accumulation was observed on the Limassol–Paphos highway near Polemidia and Pissouri, along with continued rain-related issues on the Nicosia–Limassol highway (Kakoratzia–Choirokoitia) and the Larnaca–Ayia Napa route (Kosi–Oroklini).
Authorities have issued ongoing warnings for drivers to maintain low speeds, keep safe distances, and keep vehicle headlights illuminated. The Meteorological Service predicts continued unstable weather conditions, including possible isolated thunderstorms and hail, affecting the region through Monday, October 5.
