Elam calls for new Cyprus strategy amid diplomatic impasse

Following a meeting of the National Council on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, the leader of the Elam party, Christos Christou, expressed pessimism regarding the Cyprus issue, citing persistent Turkish intransigence. He formally rejected the bizonal, bicommunal federation as a solution framework and advocated for a new national strategy aimed at securing the interests of Cypriot Hellenism for future generations.

Simultaneously, reports indicate a significant disagreement between the two sides regarding the documentation of progress. While the Greek Cypriot side advocates for a document recording past convergences to restart negotiations—an idea originally proposed by Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman—the Turkish side has reportedly refused to accept it. In response, President Christodoulides has proposed an alternative approach: recording existing divergences between the parties to serve as a starting point for potential future discussions. This procedural deadlock remains a major obstacle, echoing similar difficulties encountered during the previous mission of Maria Angela Holguin, the personal envoy of the UN Secretary-General.
