ELAM leader calls for a new Cyprus issue strategy following National Council meeting

Following a National Council meeting on September 30, 2026, ELAM President Christos Christou expressed skepticism regarding the current status of the Cyprus issue. Despite acknowledging the goodwill and proposals presented by President Nikos Christodoulides during recent developments in New York, Christou stated that persistent Turkish intransigence currently precludes any optimism for a breakthrough.

Christou reiterated his party's categorical opposition to a Bizonal Bicommunal Federation (BBF) as the framework for a resolution. He argued that the current diplomatic approach has failed to yield results, asserting that the National Council must collectively formulate an entirely new strategy. According to Christou, this revised approach should seek a new basis for a settlement that would better serve the interests of the Cypriot Hellenism and guarantee the security of future generations.

The official stance from ELAM highlights a continued political divide within the Republic of Cyprus regarding the methodology for reunification. As the diplomatic impasse continues, the party's leadership is pressing for a fundamental policy shift, rejecting established international negotiation parameters.
