Odysseas Michaelides warns of impasse in Cyprus settlement process

Following a meeting of the National Council on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, the leader of the ALMA movement, Odysseas Michaelides, described the current status of the Cyprus negotiations as tragic. He identified Turkey as the primary obstacle to progress, expressing doubt that any meaningful resolution will be reached before the United Nations Secretary-General concludes his term.

Michaelides urged the President of the Republic and the Cypriot government to utilize the remaining days during which the UN-led diplomatic window remains open to break the current deadlock. However, he cautioned that Turkey appears likely to successfully prevent any breakthrough, potentially leaving the incoming UN leadership with no progress to build upon. He emphasized that the government must stop projecting an image of non-existent mobility and instead begin developing a strategic plan for the future that explicitly highlights Turkey’s obstructionist stance in the international arena.
