Cyprus reports significant progress on GRECO anti-corruption recommendations

At the Cyprus Forum held in Nicosia on September 30, 2026, government official Christodoulos Charalambous stated that Cyprus has fully or partially implemented approximately 80 percent of the anti-corruption recommendations issued by the Council of Europe’s monitoring body, GRECO. Addressing a panel discussion, Charalambous emphasized that the latest compliance assessment acknowledges significant progress, though he noted that certain reforms remain pending due to required legislative changes.

The fifth evaluation round of GRECO followed an on-site visit to Cyprus in 2022, resulting in a total of 22 specific recommendations. These were divided into 13 directives focused on central government structures and nine concerning law-enforcement authorities. Charalambous stressed that these findings should not be perceived as an indictment of the state, but rather as a framework for transparency and rule-of-law improvements. The event, chaired by Nicolas Kyriakides, highlighted the government's ongoing commitment to aligning national standards with international anti-corruption benchmarks.
