Diplomats address the impact of the Cyprus problem on regional stability and energy

At the Cyprus Forum held on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, international diplomats emphasized that the unresolved Cyprus problem prevents the nation from fully leveraging its strategic geographic location. Indian High Commissioner Manish and German Chargé d’Affaires Mirko Kruppa stated that without a resolution, the country must rely on costlier alternatives and cannot realize its full potential, noting that all energy projects on the island have effectively stalled due to its division.

German envoy Mirko Kruppa remarked that meaningful progress in energy and security is limited, suggesting that a unified security policy would require the 'north' and 'south' to agree on complex issues like NATO membership and the presence of Turkish forces. Meanwhile, Indian High Commissioner Manish highlighted ongoing discussions regarding Cyprus's integration into the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), stressing the need for the country to maintain sovereignty and diversify its partnerships. Both speakers underscored that long-term stability and success depend on resolving the island's division, as Europe currently lacks the immediate mechanisms to secure Cyprus's energy and crisis response needs.
