Update on agricultural subsidies and state support in Cyprus

The Cyprus Agricultural Payments Organization (KOAP) has confirmed that 70% of agricultural crops in Cyprus receive subsidies, a practice aligned with EU policies. According to Commissioner Andreas Kyprianou, over 80% of these subsidies concern private land, while 13% are for Turkish Cypriot land and 5% for state land. Crucially, the organization does not subsidize property ownership, but rather agricultural activity, requiring applicants to demonstrate legal possession of the land through title deeds or lease agreements.

In separate developments, the Department of Agriculture announced the distribution of €1 million in state aid to 650 professional farmers and agricultural businesses to offset rising costs for fertilizers and supplies, following a Cabinet decision on March 26, 2026. Furthermore, two new emergency support schemes totaling approximately €1.5 million have been approved to help farmers manage increased costs for agricultural fuel and fertilizers caused by the geopolitical crisis in the Middle East. These schemes will be fully funded by European resources, with an application window opening from November 2 to November 16.
