Security alert at Syntagma Square ends after investigation of suspicious bag

Authorities in Athens declared a security alert on the afternoon of Wednesday, September 30, 2026, after a suspicious backpack was discovered at Syntagma Square near Othonos Street. A passerby reported the object, which was found lying next to a tree, prompting an immediate response from the police.

To facilitate a safe investigation, the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Department (TEEM) cordoned off the area. Consequently, traffic was temporarily suspended on Vasileos Georgiou A' Street, from the junction with Vasilissis Amalias Avenue, and on Stadiou Street, starting from Amerikis Street. These measures were implemented as a standard precautionary procedure to protect the public while specialists inspected the object.

Following a thorough examination by the bomb squad, it was determined that the bag contained only clothing. Once the inspection was completed and the site was declared safe, police removed the security cordon, and vehicle traffic was fully restored in the city center. No further action or investigations were reported as the incident was deemed a false alarm.
