Parliamentary committee discusses environmental impact of Sia quarry expansion

On September 30, 2026, the Parliamentary Committee on the Environment held an ex-officio discussion regarding the cumulative environmental impacts of the quarry in the village of Sia. Local representatives, including the community president, as well as a technical and legal advisor, testified that the daily lives of residents are significantly burdened by the facility's operations and complained about the lack of comprehensive studies assessing this impact.

The committee chair, ELAM MP Linos Papagiannis, questioned the Mines and Quarries Service regarding whether formal applications for expansion exist or if only research permits for new mineral deposits have been submitted. He further inquired whether the Department of Environment has completed any environmental impact studies for the area over the last five years. Meanwhile, the Department of Town Planning and Housing stated that it has not received any official application for a quarry expansion permit. The Mines and Quarries Service emphasized the strategic need to secure local sources of inert materials for construction.

DISY MP Andreas Konstantinou noted that he personally visited the area and confirmed many of the grievances raised by the community. The committee session highlighted the ongoing tension between industrial resource requirements and local community welfare.
