Data Protection Authority completes probe into 2026 election complaints

The Cyprus Personal Data Protection Authority has concluded its investigation into 24 complaints filed during the May 24, 2026, parliamentary election process. The complaints primarily concerned unsolicited political communication, including phone calls, SMS messages, and emails. Of the total cases received, 21 were directed against individual political candidates, while three targeted political parties. Additionally, one specific complaint involved the public announcement of a name during the voting process.

Following the review, the Authority issued warnings and recommendations for ten of the cases. The remaining 14 complaints were deemed unfounded, could not be investigated due to a lack of necessary evidence, or were withdrawn by the complainants. Despite these incidents, the Authority noted that the overall volume of complaints regarding unauthorized political outreach was lower than in previous election cycles. No further legal actions or ongoing investigations were announced, marking the official closure of these electoral data protection inquiries.
