Police conduct island-wide crime prevention operations in Cyprus
Cypriot police have conducted a series of intensive, island-wide crime prevention operations aimed at maintaining public order and increasing public safety. Over several consecutive nights in early October 2026, authorities established checkpoints at key urban locations, performing extensive vehicle and pedestrian inspections. In the most recent operation, officers checked 724 vehicles and 924 individuals, leading to 12 arrests for various offenses including illegal residency, drug possession, and public intoxication. Additionally, police conducted 76 inspections of business premises and issued 319 traffic reports, including 113 for speeding. Twenty-six vehicles were impounded during this period.
The operations follow a pattern of nightly enforcement that resulted in varying numbers of arrests and citations across the week. For example, earlier operations saw the arrest of four to six individuals for charges ranging from illegal tobacco possession to unlicensed security work. In addition to these crime-fighting efforts, the police announced a specific focus on road safety, noting that 18 fatal accidents involving riders of motorcycles, mopeds, and personal mobility devices have occurred since the beginning of 2026. Consequently, officials have scheduled targeted campaigns to enforce helmet usage and prevent traffic violations to reduce further casualties.
