Turkey deploys Oruc Reis in Eastern Mediterranean amidst regional energy tensions
On October 1, 2026, Turkey issued NAVTEX 0953/26, marking the return of the research vessel Oruc Reis to the Eastern Mediterranean for activities scheduled until October 25. The vessel, accompanied by the ships Denar Pathfinder, Denar Echo, and Kirici, is conducting surveys between the Turkish coast and the waters south of the Turkish-occupied area of Cyprus. Turkish officials linked these activities to a planned 97-101 kilometer natural gas pipeline project connecting Anamur in southern Turkey to the northern part of Cyprus.
Simultaneously, Turkey has intensified diplomatic friction regarding the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI), an electricity cable project intended to link Greece, Cyprus, and eventually Israel. The Turkish Ministry of Defense asserted that any cable or pipeline activity within its claimed continental shelf requires prior coordination with Ankara, declaring that it would not permit unauthorized operations. In response, Cyprus and Greece have rejected these demands, with the Greek government stating that the GSI project will proceed according to its original schedule without seeking Turkish approval. Cypriot Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos has accused Turkey of blocking the project through illegal maritime claims. Regional analysts view this escalation as a deliberate challenge to maritime jurisdiction and energy development in the Eastern Mediterranean.
