U.S. orders Iranian delegation to depart from New York
On Monday evening, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio ordered the Iranian delegation, including Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, to depart the United States immediately following the conclusion of the United Nations General Assembly. The directive came as indirect negotiations between Washington and Tehran reached a deadlock.
American officials justified the expulsion by stating that the Iranian mission had remained in New York longer than deemed necessary after the formal high-level proceedings of the General Assembly had concluded. Although the White House had initially expressed optimism regarding potential progress earlier on Monday, the diplomatic climate soured by the afternoon, leading to the collapse of discussions. Qatar, which has been acting as a mediator in the indirect talks, remains a focal point for the process.
Following the order, the Iranian delegation, including Araghchi, departed New York for Doha, Qatar. While U.S. officials described the expulsion as a routine move based on the conclusion of the UN session, the event highlights the ongoing strain and lack of diplomatic progress between the two nations.
