Severe weather conditions cause widespread flooding in Crete
On October 1, 2026, the island of Crete was hit by severe weather, leading to significant flooding and damage across multiple regions. The Mylopotamos area faced the most difficult conditions, as heavy rainfall caused a local river in Zoniana to overflow, sending debris and water into homes and businesses. Electrical grid failures were reported in Zoniana, Anogeia, and Axos, with the entire island placed on high alert.
A dangerous incident occurred in Diskouri when a road and bridge section collapsed beneath a vehicle carrying an elderly couple. Both occupants were transported to the hospital for precautionary checks, though no serious injuries were reported. In Heraklion, rainfall exceeded 220 millimeters in the area of Profitis Ilias, severely impacting the local road network and damaging agricultural facilities in Roukani. Authorities have issued emergency warnings to residents as the situation remains under close observation.
