Flydubai flight incident forces emergency landing in Saudi Arabia
On September 30, 2026, a flydubai flight departing from Dubai for Tel Aviv with 174 passengers on board was forced to make an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, following an onboard attack. According to reports, the Omani co-pilot allegedly attacked the Indian pilot, Smit Matchar, with a sharp object, causing the Boeing aircraft to lose altitude rapidly. Several passengers, identified as Yaniv Hayun, Tzvika Manes, and Asaf Razuan, along with other individuals, intervened to subdue the co-pilot and regain control of the flight.
While Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu initially cited concerns over potential radicalization and linked the event to a near-catastrophe, he later clarified that he did not view it as a traditional hijacking. The pilot, who suffered severe head and hand injuries, is reportedly recovering well according to the Indian Embassy in the UAE. Saudi authorities refused requests to send Israeli military aircraft to retrieve the passengers.
Authorities in the UAE have launched a formal investigation to determine the nature of the act and whether it involved terrorism or external coordination. US President Donald Trump has suggested potential Iranian involvement, warning of severe consequences if verified, while the Pentagon is reportedly planning to bolster its naval presence in the region. The investigation remains ongoing across multiple countries.
