Escalation in hostilities between Saudi-led coalition and Houthi rebels
The Saudi-led military coalition reported that Houthi rebels from Yemen carried out an attack on an electrical substation in Medina earlier this week, disabling a transformer without causing power grid interruptions. While the coalition claims wreckage from a drone proves Houthi involvement, the Houthi-linked Saba news agency has denied these allegations. The targetted substation provides power to the Prophet’s Mosque, one of Islam's holiest sites.
Separately, the coalition announced on Thursday that it intercepted four drones and two ballistic missiles launched by the Houthis against the southern Saudi cities of Khamis Mushait and Jazan. These incidents follow a pattern of heightened military activity; two weeks ago, a drone was intercepted near Mecca before entering restricted airspace, an event the Houthis also denied targeting. The ongoing conflict reflects an intensification of cross-border drone and missile strikes by the Iranian-aligned movement against Saudi territory.
These developments mark a period of significant military friction between the coalition and the Yemeni rebel movement. Investigations into the wreckage from the Medina attack are ongoing as the coalition continues to defend against repeated aerial incursions.
