Cyprus parliamentary committee visits central prisons to address systemic issues
On October 2, 2026, members of the Legal Affairs Committee of the Cyprus Parliament conducted an inspection of the Central Prisons. The visit aimed to assess the prison environment and living conditions to better inform future legislative efforts regarding the correctional system.
During the site visit, committee chair Fotini Tsiridou highlighted chronic operational challenges. Key issues identified include severe overcrowding, the proliferation of narcotics and illicit mobile phones within the facility, and the organization of criminal activities by inmates from inside the walls. Furthermore, officials discussed the rising number of detainees imprisoned for drug-related offenses and sexual abuse, particularly involving minors. A significant point of contention remains the pending implementation of technology to disable unauthorized mobile phone signals.
The committee emphasized that the prison system should prioritize rehabilitation and social reintegration rather than simple detention. Tsiridou noted that the current environment complicates these efforts, necessitating structural reforms to address the intersection of security lapses and the growing prisoner population.
