Court extends detention for nine suspects following Kyrenia shipwreck
On October 2, 2026, a district court in Kyrenia extended the detention of nine suspects by seven days in connection with the tragic shipwreck that occurred on August 30. The suspects include the vessel's captain, crew members, and the director of the owning company. During the hearing, relatives of the victims protested outside the courthouse, demanding justice for the deceased and the missing.
Authorities revealed that the ship's voyage data recorder (VDR), recovered on September 25, has been sent to Turkey for expert analysis. Transcribed audio recordings are also being processed to identify voices and verify dialogues. A technical report from the Chamber of Mechanical Engineers characterized previous vessel repairs as inadequate, unprofessional, and unacceptable. Investigators further established that the ship's watertight doors were left open prior to the voyage, contrary to safety protocols, and are currently examining internal reports concerning the second engineer's prior warnings about technical faults.
Ongoing investigations are focused on maintenance records and procedural failures. While search and rescue operations for the missing continue in the area, authorities are awaiting further expert analysis to finalize their report and determine legal responsibilities.
