Kyrenia court extends detention for nine suspects in August 30 shipwreck
The district court in Kyrenia has extended the detention of nine suspects for an additional seven days regarding the August 30 shipwreck. The proceedings were marked by protests from families of victims and missing persons outside the courthouse, who demanded justice for the incident.
Authorities revealed that the vessel's Voyage Data Recorder (VDR), recovered on September 25, has been sent to Turkey for technical examination. Recordings from the device are being transcribed and compared with voice samples of the suspects to identify speakers. Investigations by the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Mechanical Engineers concluded that previous repairs to the vessel were inadequate. Furthermore, police stated that the ship's watertight doors were found to have been left open prior to the voyage, a critical error that likely contributed to the sinking. Investigators are also examining internal communications, specifically warnings issued by the second engineer to the first engineer regarding persistent mechanical failures and questionable repair work.
Legal proceedings remain ongoing as authorities continue to process the evidence and evaluate the criminal liability of the involved personnel.
