UK diesel prices hit record high of £2 per litre
On Friday, October 2, 2026, the average pump price for a litre of diesel in the United Kingdom reached £2 (approximately $2.64), hitting 200.01 pence. This marks the first time prices have touched this threshold, continuing a steady upward trend that recently surpassed the previous record of 199.09 pence set in June 2022, shortly after the start of the conflict in Ukraine. Simon Williams, head of policy at the RAC motoring organisation, noted that the rising trend shows no signs of decelerating.
In response to the surging costs, European Union nations held discussions on Friday regarding a French proposal to release strategic diesel stocks. This measure is intended to alleviate pressure on fuel markets, following diplomatic efforts by French President Emmanuel Macron. Macron has consulted with US President Donald Trump and is planning further discussions with his G7 counterparts to coordinate potential actions aimed at stabilizing the global markets for crude oil and refined petroleum products.
