Environmental groups oppose quarry expansion in Sia
The Federation of Environmental Organizations of Cyprus (OPOK) has formally expressed strong opposition to any further expansion of quarrying activities in the village of Sia. This concern follows the recent issuance of a research permit for the area. The federation emphasizes that its stance is not against industrial development or quarrying as a whole, but is conditional upon proper land zoning, strict adherence to environmental regulations, and consistent oversight of affected landscapes.
Local residents and environmentalists are particularly focused on protecting the Xylias pine-covered hill, which is considered a vital element of the local landscape and identity. Key concerns raised during discussions at the Parliamentary Committee on Environment include the negative impacts of noise, dust, vibrations, and heavy vehicle traffic on the community. The federation has specifically called for greater transparency, systemic inspections, and the mandatory restoration of areas previously affected by mining operations, insisting that the Xylias elevation must remain untouched.
