Cyprus expands animal welfare awareness program in schools
On Friday, October 2, 2026, Cyprus Agriculture Minister Christos Senekis and the Environment and Animal Welfare Commissioner, Ilias Myrianthous, visited the Fourth Primary School of Aglandjia to mark World Animal Day. During the event, officials announced plans to expand an ongoing animal welfare awareness program to reach more schools and pupils across the country. The initiative, originally launched in 2023, is being scaled up in cooperation with the Ministry of Education to better promote the protection and rights of animals among the youth.
At the event, educator Georgia Solomou showcased a successful initiative from the previous school year titled "Lessons from the Dog." This project engaged pupils and parents through experiential activities designed to teach the needs and rights of companion animals. The program aims to bridge the gap between classroom education and home life, encouraging students to apply principles of animal welfare within their families. Minister Senekis emphasized that the government is committed to disseminating these values more widely, ensuring that animal protection becomes a fundamental part of the educational curriculum moving forward.
